Class Description:

We are much more than just a photograph of ourselves. We are a collection of life experiences, hopes and dreams.

Create a personal portrait uniquely yours by incorporating cherished treasures from the past, tokens of loves and losses and symbols of future aspirations. This mixed media collage helps us grow while making new friendships and sharing our stories.

One of the techniques that Heather will share in this class is her Faux Batik process.
**********************************************************
A Few words from Heather:

The Faux Batik technique provides a uniquely individual and beautiful background for your story, told with treasured odds and ends, memorabilia, and objects that hold secret meanings, or just fun things that you find interesting. Faux Batik is simple in theory but you must have a steady hand and a sense of curiosity. It's kind of like magic, when you learn the secret you will be amazed!

I developed this Faux Batik technique while searching for a durable, no crack, no peel, interesting and simple background for my larger dimensional sculpture pieces. It works beautifully for this result but I also found it to be perfect for jewelry making, book arts, picture frames, and photo albums. The applications are as limitless as your imagination. We will also experiment by adding stamps, markers, transfers, and molds to showcase a pendant or other wearable art. Fabric Batik is an old world tradition of beauty and personal expression. You can replicate this unique art of Batik and unlock perhaps hidden secrets and talents with us at Maureen Carlson's beautiful retreat this May 4-6    Hope to see you there!

Heather Campbell is a master at gathering together the details and images that make up a story and turning them into exquisite works of art.  See her webpage, paying special attention to the large wall sculptures/collages.  Amazing.

She'll share a part of her work with us as she guides us in the creation of a personal portrait.  In the process we're sure to learn some techniques that will be useful in other applications as well as discover a few things about ourselves.  I hope you can come to this special class!

Personal Portrait Collage
Materials list -

with special instructions from Heather

5x7 Wood picture frame. ( This size can vary according to availability. It could be a square, just something close to this size) This frame needs to have at least 3” of wood surrounding  the 5x7” picture inset. Cut out a heavy piece of cardboard to fit the inside of the 5x7 picture area on the back.

Sand paper 60 grit ( dust mask is optional but comes in handy when sanding)

Polymer Clay:
2 oz. Fimo soft clay sahara
2 oz. Fimo soft clay white
2 oz. Light to medium colored clay #1
2 oz. Light to medium colored clay #2
2 oz. Light to medium colored clay #3
If you would like to have clay to play around with please bring Extra from what is listed.

You may use any brand of clay for this project. I use Fimo soft white and sahara to mix together to make a cream color, If you have a cream color in another brand  it is fine to use. I prefer to use Fimo soft or Premo for this project. They also blend well together.

Alcohol blending solution

Alcohol inks- You will need at least three colors of inks that will go well with the clay colors that you have chosen. I use Adirondack inks and they only come in one size( about one ounce bottles)  I also usually include one brown color like ginger, or latte. But it is up to you to choose the colors that will work best with your project.

Photo of yourself or the person you are making this for. This picture needs to have been copied on a toner based copier and sized to fit  in the 5x7 space. I prefer it to be done in black and white. Make several extra copies in case you need to practice.  There is a toner-based copier at Maureen's, with copies at $.08 each.

Acrylic craft paints. We will be painting the frame first. Choose a color that will be a good background for the clay colors that you have chosen.

Personal trinkets, memorabilia, string or loose beads, jewelry parts, watches, buttons, belts, stones, seeds, keys, bells, coins, ticket stubs, other pictures to transfer, pet reminders, etc....
