ABOUT FANTASY WEEK
For the past 18 years, Maureen has conducted one or more Fantasy
Week classes each year at Maureen Carlson's Center for Creative
Arts in Jordan, MN USA. In 2017 she's taking the
experience to Ireland!
Why Ireland? Because for the last three Fantasy Week
classes, we were forunate to have as one of the students
Fr. John Friel, from Crossgar, Northern
Ireland. He invited us to come to Ireland in 2017, so here we are!
some of Maureen's work which could be
re-imagined with an Irish flair.
Fantasy Week - Ireland 2017
will be inspired by the
landscape, myths, architecture and history that surrounds Tobar
Mhuire Retreat and Conference Center. Participants are encouraged to
bring their cameras and/or sketch pads to capture textures and
shapes, colors and
moods. Each student will then design a piece or pieces from polymer
clay and mixed media which incorporates those elements, or
suggestions of them, into a work of art. Of course, Maureen will be
there each step of the way to help the participants reach their
Materials available for
classroom use will be polymer clay, Apoxie Sculpt,
flexible molding supplies, paint, wire, cardboard, fiberfil, paper
and fabric. There will be scavenger hunts along the water ways and
wooded paths (always a mystery) as well as opportunities to browse
in a few irish shops and markets.
Time To Explore: There
will also be time spent away from the classroom exploring other
parts of Ireland, including the rugged northwest coast and the
cities of Dublin and Belfast.
With camera and sketchpad in
hand, these are sure to provide further inspiration for
creative works, not only for the week in Ireland, but for
studio time once we return home

Note: When scheduling your return

that you be at the airport 2 1/2 hours

hours required for travel and check-in

should be scheduled for 11:00 AM or
later so that we all don't have to get

A Note From Maureen:
Ah, Irish stories, Irish You
Tube videos, e-mail conversations with Geraldine, the secretary
at Tobar Mhuire, and with John Friel, our Irish connection and
friend extraordinaire. Hours spent figuring out USD (Dollar) and
GPB (British Pound) conversion rates, listening to Irish music,
dreaming dreams. These are some of the things that I've been
doing to work out the preliminary details for this trip.
