Requirements for Zoom

You will need a computer, laptop, tablet or phone that has a camera installed or attached as a webcam. We recommend that you use your largest screen rather than your telephone if possible.

Zoom is free for you to use but it will save time if you download the Zoom app to your device before the class begins. If you are in the USA, you can do so here:  Zoom Link

For other countries, do a Zoom search for your country.

INVITATION: Once you have signed up for the class you will be sent helpful tips for working with Zoom as well as a link to the Zoom class.

Class Description:  We all have stories to tell. We often do that with words, but what if a string of beads were to carry a story that is told through the shapes, colors, textures and symbolism of its components?

That's just what this class is all about: Making a necklace that tells a story. Your story.

Class will begin with the sharing of stories and how those stories might be incorporated into a necklace. Once each participant decides on a story, or a theme, the making begins.

A variety of bead-making techniques, including sculpting, textural contrasts, layering of colored clays, slicing, stamping, drilling and sanding will be demonstrated, as will the use of paints and alcohol inks for adding color.

The use of found objects and fibers as  beads or bead embellishments will also be encouraged. Notice the pieces of driftwood, keys, an optometrist lense and glass and metal beads in the samples. Methods for adding additional fibers will be discussed including how to incorporate macrame and knotting.

The 4 class sessions will be about generating ideas and demonstrating techniques. There will also be some work time, but that may not be enough time to create all of the beads that are visualized. The class is spaced across 4 weeks so that participants can make additional beads, based on that week's lesson, during the off days.

One of the best parts of the class is the sharing of our stories which, of course, will happen naturally as the class progresses. But time will be set aside at the last session for a special "Story Time". Optional, of course.

Sharing is a choice, not a requirement. Some stories are personal and meant to be held close. And treasured.

Pictured below are samples of colored polymer clays that have been combined in a process called the Skinner Blend which creates gradient colors. This is one of the basic polymer clay techniques that will be demonstrated.

Until then, something to think about:
Sculpting is about training your eyes to see, your heart to feel and your hands to move the tools.
