Class Description:  This class will cover the basics of working with polymer clay to create clay characters.

As for the type of characters, that's up to you. Come to class with an idea of who you would like to create and why.  You are encouraged to create a back story for your character to help you imagine what it might be wearing, carrying, feeling and pondering. Every character has a story, whether you know it or not. Discovering its story makes the creation process a lot more fun, and, more forgiving.

Keep in mind that if you are a new sculptor it is much easier to make characters with large or exaggerated features than it is to make delicate fairies or sweet princesses. A sense of humor is also a great help!

The figures that Maureen will be demonstrating will be 6 to 10 inches tall. The size that you make will somewhat depend upon the oven that is available for you to use to harden the polymer clay. Characters can also be created in parts and then assembled after hardening.
Maureen will do multiple demonstrations of her step by step process for creating her signature characters. There will also be technique handouts for your reference as you go about building your skills.
Clay Character 1
The ability to imagine and then create clay characters is a skill
that develops in layers, with each
one that you create being a step towards mastery.

BUT, if you are a beginner, be bold! This is a learning process. Students will be encouraged to imagine, to plan, to learn, to play, to get in touch with that part which yearns to create.  The focus will be on setting an atmosphere where wonderful things might happen, and usually do ...

If you are an experienced sculptor, you may know most of the basics, but every tip gained is a bonus for you. Come prepared to ask questions regarding some of the sculpting problems that you may be having.

Until then, something to think about:
Sculpting is about training your eyes to see, your heart to feel and your hands to move the tools.
